A new style of volunteering project for 16-25 year olds in Knowsley, is opening doors for young people.
vTalent is a new two-year pilot project which aims to give young people skills and experience, whilst harnessing the unique contribution that they themselves can make to services, for young people and children in Knowsley. Knowsley Council is one of 33 local authorities in the country to have gained funding for the project from ‘V', the national volunteering organisation. The vTalent programme is testing new ways to positively engage and inspire young people to give their time and talents. It is proving to be a beneficial means to keep them socially connected, continuing their skills development and strengthening their role in the community. It is also helping them to obtain an optimistic outlook, especially in the present employment climate. Nicola Brown, 19, is volunteering in three children's centres in North Huyton. She said: "I joined vTalent as I enjoy working with children and wanted to gain more experience in the sector. I am studying for a Level 3 in Childcare and volunteering is really useful, helping me gain the skills I need for employment. It also allows me to get involved within my community. My confidence has really grown over the past 9 months and I am really looking forward to the future." vTalent volunteers undertake 44-week placements within Knowsley Children and Young People's Directorate and are required to volunteer 30 hours a week. Each volunteer who successfully completes the programme will receive a personal development grant of £1500, to support their transition into employment, education or training. Pat Bakewell, Project Co-ordinator, said: "I am thrilled with how the project is going so far and the progress our volunteers have made. I can't wait to work with the second group of young people, whom I am about to recruit for April 2010." For further information about vTalent Email:
